Surprisingly fun little game There have been a lot of LOTR games over the years, some good, and some atonishingly bad. So when I saw the movie tie-in to this game, I was concerned it wouldn’t be very good. But after seeing Tom Vasel review it (favorably), and seeing Knizia desisgned it, I decided to give it a go. Here’s my summary:

Well made, fun, but caters mostly to lovers of true Game Theory who want more than “luck of the draw”. Reiner Knizia is a master game designer, and this board game shows a “master’s brilliance.” The “Resource Management” format is not for all kinds of people, however, as it reflects a playful “by geniuses, for geniuses”, “we love Mensa” culture where arguing about the likelihood of a difficult dice roll is considered great fun. The artwork is beautiful, and the pieces are sturdy, high-rez-printed cardboard. By rolling several dice to get wizard pips, bunny pips…

Another elegant Knizia A (soon to be) classic Knizia cooperative game. It doesn’t have the fantastic art of Knizia’s Lord of the Rings co-op game, but retains much of the feel. Instead of cards it uses dice this time, which I greatly prefer, and probably makes it even more accessible to casual gamers and families.
