A 1-6 player cooperative game of terrifying cave escape. Players take the role of amateur cavers attempting to escape an unexplored network of subterranean tunnels, before the lights flicker out or the darker things beneath the Earth catch up to them… In Sub Terra players spend their turn exploring and revealing the tunnel system around them, attempting to survive the various perils of the cave, from floods and cave ins to gas leaks and scree. Players each have a role which gives them specialist abilities, such as an Engineer with dynamite to blast a new route or a Scout to find a route more easily. New tiles are placed from a randomized stack of cave features, which determines whether you’ll be hit with a dead end or a range of new options. At the end of each turn, players face the reality of their situation, with a hazard card drawn to determine what danger causes them damage or cuts off their way out of the horror below. These cards are finite, and when they run out, your torches flicker and the air feels tight, and your chance of survival diminishes quickly.

I love that you and your friends have to balance whether to stick together to avoid dangers, or split up to reach the exit before the cards run out. Itâs much more fun the more people you have playing. Itâs almost impossible to play the game with two players using only one character each. I think the rules say you have to control more than one character if thereâs less than 4 people playing. What I didnât like is that the glow in the dark feature…
fun strategy game Fairly easy to pick up. We often have extra players show up for our game nights it can be hard to find games for more than 4 players that don’t take forever to play that are just simple party games. This one moves along and can play 6 players. Our group enjoyed it immensely and wanted to play it again right after
Like the Forbidden series but want more? This is for you! Coming at this as a couple who enjoys Forbidden Island, Forbidden Desert, and Forbidden Sky, we were not disappointed when buying Sub Terra in order to play something similar (but not a clone or skin). The complexity level is perfect to sustain its advertised hour-long playtime.
