Our 72 piece Architect Set of Mini Unit Bricks are a developmentally appropriate mathematical building system. Brick play promotes early mathematical thought and builds fine motor and cognitive skills in early learners. Our bricks are realistically textured to increase sensory awareness and hand-eye coordination. 100% Earth Friendly Unit Bricks are made of 100% sustainably grown, compressed wood (HDF). And by using the entire tree, roots and all-we strive to produce environmentally friendly products by reducing energy usage during production and creating minimal waste. We only use organic water-based color and non-formaldehyde glue. Unit Bricks contain zero plastics and are completely non-toxic.

Unit Brick adheres to the dimensions devised by American social thinker and progressive educational reformer, Caroline Pratt. In 1914, Pratt took all of her educational knowledge and founded the City and Country School in Manhattan. The school is still flourishing today and follows Pratt’s open-ended curriculum. In Pratt-inspired classrooms, mathematics are not taught while you sit at a desk, with just numbers on paper. And science? Not just a diagram of molecules. Pratt challenged teachers to provide real world applications when teaching classroom subjects. To us, this sounds like an educational environment every student should have the opportunity to experience. And they can by learning with block play. A key component to Pratt’s curriculum was and still is play. When children are given a set of objects (if you’re thinking blocks, you’re right on track) with little guidelines and a license to experiment, we see their creativity and imaginations at work. Much of City and Country School’s curriculum was based around Pratt’s creation of wooden Unit Blocks. Pratt’s Unit Blocks were not just a random collection of toys; there was a science behind their creation, based off of her observations of how kids actually play.

Product Features

  • 3-4 year olds are detail-oriented, capable of matching and grouping items by shape and color. Just starting to exercise their imaginations with pretend play, at this age, children can build tall structures and roads, and improvise through pattern creation.
  • 5-6 year olds are investigators, able to hypothesize about their surroundings and test theories in play situations. They take pride in the final product of their efforts and are able to articulate what they create to others. This improved cognitive ability allows for a higher degree of logical thinking and intention behind their actions.
  • 7-8 year olds have a stronger sense of self and are more comfortable taking risks with hands-on experimentation. They can engage in complex problem solving and communicate more effectively. Their increasingly inquisitive nature allows for more realistic depictions of everyday life, such as running their own restaurant or store.
  • Are you looking for an educational toy for your kids or even someone else’s children to enjoy? Look no further, Unit Bricks makes an excellent gift for boys or girls ages 3 and up and it will stimulate their mind. These eco-friendly wood building blocks are high a quality stacking block set that will provide hours of creative fun. “Unit Bricks, when used alone or with natural wood building blocks, support skills to classify, measure, and seriate objects, as well as the development of logical mathematical knowledge, while adding a dimension that supports heightened creativity.” ~ Pamela C. Phelps, PhD. – Florida State University
  • A brick is the basic unit of most building foundations. It’s also the basic unit of key learning foundations. Simple unit brick play empowers kids and ignites their creativity to reach developmental milestones. Kids must master successive cognitive and motor skills in order to progress. With a strong developmental foundation, kids have a solid foundation for lifelong learning. So, what starts as simple balancing and stacking of bricks at age 3 can lead to study of the mechanics of building a bridge at age 10. Unit bricks encourage a dialogue between children and the world.

The pieces feel nice to the touch and are interesting in the variety … These really are very high quality! The pieces feel nice to the touch and are interesting in the variety of shapes. Truly for the 3+ crowd, as some of the blocks are rather small, these are a great choice for children who love to build and are ready for more choices in a block set!
