Set in ancient Rome, Trajan is a development game in which players try to increase their influence and power in various areas of Roman life such as political influence, trading, military dominion and other important parts of Roman culture. The central mechanism of the game uses a system similar to that in Mancala or pit-and-pebbles games. In Trajan, a player has six possible actions: building, trading, taking tiles from the forum, using the military, influencing the Senate and placing Trajan tiles on his tableau. This is a Euro-style strategy game and playing time is 30 minutes per player.

Well-made board game The game is great and pretty simple (assuming you’re reading reviews on it because you’ve played euros). You have six actions, all of which feel pretty well balanced. They are available to you depending on how you manipulate your ‘rondel’, which is a challenge in itself. I never felt like any of the actions were too overpowered or underpowered and the balance allows for a good amount of strategies. Some actions are easily overlooked, but after multiple plays, you can really see their value,…

A casual review by a gamer’s wife The point of the game: You’re a roman (trying to impress the real Trajan, I spose) who’s looking for power. The board sets up nicely on the average kitchen table with space to spare, which is great!

Castles of Burgundy by Stefan Feld is one of our favorite games, so we were on fire to get Trajan since it looks like it would be very similar. Wow were we ever disappointed. Trajan is dull, lifeless, with a thin veneer of theme and a gimmicky mancala system that added nothing to the game. It felt like work and just going through the motions to finish the game. We can’t wait to get it out of the house to make way for something better.
