Fool’s Gold takes place during the gold rush of 1849. Players are investors sending prospectors on a quest to find gold. There are various locations (mountains, a forest, a river, etc.) each with unique perils and quantities of gold. As players remove valuable gold cards from the location decks, silt becomes more prominent and gold becomes harder to find. At the end of the game the player with the most gold wins, with one twist. Each player must throw out all gold cards from the area they found the most (turns out it was so easy to find because it’s fool’s gold)!

Hits a sweet spot between a simple card/dice game and a complex strategy game. Our family played this at GenCon 2016 and we all found it quite enjoyable – so much that it was one of the few (out of thousands) of games we purchased that week. We had to buy it here, as it was unavailable for sale there. There is a decent amount of chance and yet a fair amount of strategy present. The rules are fairly straightforward and easy to grasp. It fills a niche between playing a simple card game with the family and playing a complex strategy game.
Truly a Hidden Gem I have found this to be an excellent game to play with non-gamers. It’s very easy to teach and to understand, while still offering a gratifying depth of choices to make. A little luck of the draw never hurt anyone… well not too much. Also, I find the game feels very thematic to me for some reason, which is not something I normally care about. All of the rules and actions that you take just seem to make sense.
I honestly enjoy this game more than I should. I expected to like this game a little bit, but god dammit I like this game a lot. It’s a nice, quick kind of push your luck worker placement game and at least for my group the games are quick. Like 30’ish minutes. It’s a good in between game if youre playing a bunch of long ones.
