Cup-and-ball is a traditional children’s toy consisting of a wooden cup with a handle, and a ball attached to the cup by a string. It is popular in Spanish-speaking countries, where it is called “boliche”. A variant game, Kendama, known in English as Ring and Pin, is popular in Japan. The game had its golden age during the reign of Louis XV – among the upper classes people owned baleros made of ivory. Actors also sometimes appeared with them in scenes. The game was very popular in the 18th and 19th centuries. In fact Jean-Jacques Rousseau mentions the game early in his Confessions when stating his reservations about idle talk and hands, saying (in trans.) “If ever I went back into society I should carry a cup-and-ball in my pocket, and play with it all day long to excuse myself from speaking when I had nothing to say.”

good stuff here Great for beginners for it is a little bit bigger than the normal ball in a cup. I like to let my friends use it so they dont feel as inferior when im using my kendama

Blast from the past.. A toy for adults, too. Family gatherings and cousin competition..who has the “in the cup” record. Winner gets possession of ball and cup till next gathering.

Good old-fashioned fun! Good quality, fun to use. Not plastic!!!I bought this for “long ago day” for my child to bring to school, but it has been sitting in the living room for a couple months since and people love to try it out as they walk by. Unlike current toys, it hold up great!
